Students from the Agricultural Education Department at Murang’a University of Technology recently undertook an exciting and insightful learning visit to KALRO – Arid and Range Lands Research Institute (ARLRI) Kiboko to explore research and innovations shaping the pasture and fodder value chain in Kenya’s arid and semi-arid lands.
During the visit, the students gained in-depth knowledge on range grass seed production, including seed selection, multiplication, processing, and certification processes that ensure the establishment of quality pastures. They also explored the critical role of forage legumes in enhancing soil fertility, improving livestock nutrition, and promoting sustainable pasture production systems.
The learning tour further exposed the students to modern livestock management technologies such as improved feeding systems, hay and silage making, and breeding strategies aimed at enhancing livestock productivity and climate resilience. The visit provided a valuable hands-on experience that successfully bridged classroom theory with real-world agricultural research, empowering the next generation of agricultural educators with practical knowledge and inspiration.
Through such visits, KALRO reinforces its role as a national hub for knowledge generation, technology transfer, and capacity building by enhancing awareness of research outputs, promoting adoption of its technologies, and nurturing strategic partnerships that support sustainable agricultural development and climate-resilient livestock production in Kenya.
